Architects announce their work on new Woodland courthouse
Yolo County Superior Court to be completed in 2014
From Fentress Architects:
The California State Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) has selected Fentress Architects, in association with Dreyfuss & Blackford Architects, to design a new 163,000-square-foot courthouse for Yolo County in Woodland, California—the most significant civic building to be constructed in Woodland in nearly a century.
The Woodland Courthouse has a construction budget of $173 million and is one of 41 courthouses awarded by the AOC in 2009 and funded by Senate Bill 1407. The courthouse will be paid for with funds collected from traffic fees and fines and completed in 2014.

Let me guess. 1880s, brick-colored stucco or press-on bricks, and a useless tower or two. Polish it off with some farm equipment displayed out front, spray painted black.
Folks might be interested to know that one of the partners in Dreyfuss & Blackford Architects is Pete Saucerman, a Woodland native who is still very tied to the community.
Let me guess 2 - A pppppPaul Haaanson design:
1. Fake Spanish Colored Stucco, not like the real stuff they used to use...
2. Add in an ugly useless tower like the Wal Mart Shopping Center or Homeless Shelter
3. Use some colored ugly cement like the Weisman building
4. Throw on some black rod iron and wahhhla another fake ugly
Spanish Hanson Woodland Building...
For Anonymous 12:29 pm -- Are you a person who can only feel good about yourself by making fun of others? To make fun of Paul Hanson, who has worked for many years to communicate articulately and intelligently to his fellow employees, elected officials and Woodland residents, is to identify yourself as someone with a much greater impairment than Paul's. Paul has a speech impairment. You apparently have a self-esteem impairment, as well as a complete lack of good judgment. And do you really not know how to spell "Voila?" And by the way, the "V" is pronounced in "voila," so your poor attempt at humor AND spelling falls completely flat. Next time you post on this blog, try putting on your thinking cap first. Then you might have something meaningful to contribute.
To add to the last commenter, it's the Wiseman Building not Weisman and it's wrought iron not rod iron. Critiquing the design standards is one thing, which I agree with, making fun or people is another, which I don't agree with.
He is rude, cruel and mean to people especially the business community. He says nasty things about community people while on his job. He uses foul language. He has no respect and thus; we have no respect.
And dont the big shiny horse in front of the court house. Or we can make sure of a big migrant mural on front of it.
All of you are wrong about Paul Hanson. He is a dedicated public servant who applies the policies that the City Council and Planning Commission adopt. He only enforces public policy.
Thank goodness we have people like him that can follow policies no matter what bully steps up to the counter.
Quit asking for favors or special treatment and you might just find him a likeable guy who is here to serve.

Paul has run numerous business owners through the ringer. You must not have a downtown business or have ever been subject to his selective criteria.
He is a total control freak.
The only thing he likes is foam letters in his select colors, tile on the frotn of buildings and un defined spanish towers.
He causes much grief and financial distress to the downtown businesses and property owners. He is flat disliked downtown.
I would be happy to name the list I know of. They even had a downtown meeting to discuss him years ago. At that time, someone from the city said he was supposed to be replaced, the guy that was in community development and always slept throught council meetings was involved, as I recall.
Paul totally lacks any sort of people skills. That is why he has been taken off the front desk.
But he is not limited to pissing off the downtown, he also runs off other good developemnts. For example In and Out back in the early 2000's with his control issues. They were supposed to go where Sonic is now. The list goes on.
My Opinion
The city will have little control over the way the state building looks. Hopefully it will be an architectural specimen that reflects forward-thinking design that will add to the community's inventory of various architectural styles. Enough of the fake 1880s, or whatever generic standard you want to call it, to which the first commenter alluded.
To My Opinion: I'd like to see that list of people. Funny how you can call out Paul but can't put your name behind it. What would you call that?
Call it "Self Preservation" Dino...
I would assume you have been around the downtown and dealt with him long enough to know exactly what we are speaking about. Especially on Art in Public Places and Dead Cat Alley issues. (No I did not post that about him in the recent Art section, FYI)
Next thing that would happen, if one complains and about Mr Hanson or if any of the downtown business publically come out of the closet - is that they or their business will likely get a visit from code enforcement on down City of Woodland line.
A few of us have been there done that and learned our lessons. We now just share our experience with the newbies. It is not so bad now that he is taken off of the front desk.
I am not going to publically list the names, I can send you an email that contains most of the business or property owners in the Downtown.
The little guys are not alone as even Mr. Petrovich has had issues with him and voiced these as I recall about him at a meeting years ago at Vickies old bookstore on Court St.

You miss the point. Paul is only a voice for the City Council and Planning Commission. You state excatly my case, you wanted something special and didn't get it. So it's Paul's fault?
Go after the rule makers not the enforcer. Better yet live within the rules.

I think you're right about going after the rule makers, but I disagree that living within the rules is better. The rules and the people who enforce them - and many times the rules are made up by the people who enforce them (like the public art requirement) - have left the downtown in a state that is far short of its potential.
Self Preservation,
Your assumption is correct that I have been around the downtown dealing with such issues as the APP and Dead Cat Alley. That is probably the main reason why I joined this blog and eventually started a newspaper so that the community can start having a say in how the downtown transforms. As I stated above, the condition of the downtown is far short of its potential. Yes, that is due to the rule makers and enforcers (sometimes one and the same as stated above).
Admittedly, I have had fun blasting anonymous commenters (idiotic trolls) in this forum but in this particular case, I just think a more diplomatic approach to criticizing policies would be better than calling out an individual - especially if you can't stand behind your comments.
I also believe that if you contacted any of the city council members or the city manager about problems with the city, you would not be retaliated against. I could not say that about the last regime. That's just my opinion. And I can envision good things starting to happen in the downtown despite some bumps in the road.
Paul makes his own voice and rules. The other staff and employees have to clean up his messes. That is why he was moved.
After trying to cover up a lie, that he got called on... I can tell you he called me a bitch at the front counter and there were witnesses. I was not using foul language etc... just pointing out the facts he was lying about.
In my book he is the lowest form of life.
The people here are right, he was supposed to be fired years ago.
