Woodland High identified as persistent low achiever, CDE to recalculate list for possible removal

From Woodland Joint Unified School District:

Woodland High School has been identified by the CDE as a “persistently low achieving” school. Today at 1:30 p.m., WJUSD was notified CDE is recalculating the list and it is unknown if WHS will be removed from the list or will remain on the list. The decision will be finalized at the Department of Education Board meeting on Thursday, March 11. WJUSD will continue planning to prepare for either scenario.

Maybe if some of the students spoke ENGLISH in any recognizable form the scores wouldn't be so low!

You've pinpointed one of many flaws of the No Child Left Behind Act, specifically, and mandated testing, in general.

The fact is, the United States is diverse. It's made up of lots of cultures and individuals. The U.S. also has a relatively liberal immigration policy compared to other countries.

If a large part of a student population is still learning the English language (are English Language Learners - ELLs), it is likely that test scores based on multi-subject exams given in English would be lower than the same tests given to proficient English speakers.

Assuming that ELLs have the right to attend U.S. schools, how can the government justify sanctions against schools that are based on biased test results?

The testing system is flawed. The NCLB Act is a disgrace. We the people shouldn't be directing the blame on children who are learning English, we should be critisizing our representatives who continue to perpetuate poor legislation. It would be one thing if representatives listened to educators, but you and I know they have a problem listening to anybody except special interest groups and their egos.

Consider this, most other industrialized countries began kicking America's butt in education prior to NCLB. They still do. California is especially bad compared to states east of the Rockies. Look at your representatives, not the kids.

Right on Dino:

You nshould run for school board we need someone like you on the board.

This explains a lot about the mental capacity of the Council enacting a sales tax when the community is broke!

Anonymous said...

I'm not broke and I am willing to pay the 1/4 cent because I care about this community and I realize that it is a painless tax thats benefit far outweighs your damn all taxes attitude.

Another side to this issue is: The amount of the tax may be affordable, but the perception that the city has not, and will not, manage money properly might persuade voters to reject any increase on principle.

3:00

Council is not enacting a tax increase. Council only approved putting it on the ballot so voters can decide. In fact, Bill Marble is the only one who did not say he was for an increase (at least in the video clips we've been posting). He said let the voters have the opportunity to decide.

The testing that has been used to measure the academic achievement is flawed. The main architect of the NCLB, Diane Ravitch, has recently (latest book) admitted she was wrong and NCLB, testing, business model, accountability movement is destroying the American educational system. The San Diego, Chicago models were wrong and contributed to the destruction of the ed system she describes. Must read book.

8:41,

You'll be interested in this:

From the Project Censored article "# 12 Bush Profiteers Collect Billions From No Child Left Behind:"
The architect of No Child Left Behind (NCLB), President Bush’s first senior education advisor, Sandy Kress, has turned the program, which has consistently proven disastrous in the realm of education, into a huge success in the realm of corporate profiteering. After ushering NCLB through the US House of Representatives in 2001 with no public hearings, Kress went from lawmaker—turning on spigots of federal funds—to lobbyist, tapping into those billions of dollars in federal funds for private investors well connected to the Bush administration.

Perhaps I can tie the three comments to the district.

WJUSD trustees are planning some sort of taxation measure to help with their budget. This could be compared to the majority of council members who will support a sales tax increase.

If you were to take a five minute tour of the vacuous Blue Shield building - and you knew how much they agreed to pay in rent - you will know that the trustees should not be asking for any money from the community.

I will be voting against ANY school district request for money. This has nothing to do about how much money the community or individuals can afford... this has to do with a proven record of mismanagement and overspending.

All five council members voted for the sales tax increase, including Marble.

dino said...

2:15

You are mistaken. Council voted to put the sales tax increase on the ballot. During the meeting in which they voted to do that, all of them - except Marble - said they support the increase.

Go back and watch/listen to Marble's video.

He said: It will be a unanimous support of putting it on the ballot for voters to make the decision."

Why does this discussion have to always get retarded back into the City Council politics and a sales tax increase?

Woodland High SUCKS because the kids are being raised like animals and taught in a zoo. Pioneer is just as bad but gets a free ride for another year or two.

Woodland has turned into Tijuana North. It's a hell hole of gangs and losers of every make and model, not just Mexicans (was just using Tijuana as a hell hole reference).

Instead of whining about what the "downtown elitists" are doing in their complete FAIRY TALE of what Woodland truly is (a ghetto). Do something to improve this City!

Parents: Beat the hell out of yours kids! These entitlement jerks offs are ruining Woodland! adults; GET THE HECK off all the meth and clean up your act! Try mowing your lawn! Show a little work ethic. Show some pride in yourself beyond flipping off the rival high school.

People in this DUMP (thanks Pedrois) wont get their lazy butts off their front porch to report crimes anymore but OH...WHOA...someone said the home of 'da Wolves isn't cool anymore....RELEASE HELL!

Get real.

Get Real,

First you complain that the discussion gets "retarded back into the City Council politics and a sales tax increase" - whatever that means - but then you take liberty in taking the discussion to include "downtown elitists" who need to "Do something to improve this City" (unrelated to WHS) and "People in this DUMP (thanks Pedrois) wont get their lazy butts off their front porch to report crimes."

It's obvious you did not take advantage of the free education provided to you, wherever you went to high school. Notice I did not say wherever you graduated from high school.

I do agree with you that parents need to raise their kids properly and school administrations should be more strict.

What can Get Real do as mayor?

Dino,

If you reread my post, I mentioned the Downtown Elitists in the context of not focusing on the Council (your fav topic) and on cleaning up the City, something that is VERY WHS related. The Schools wont improve until the parents and the animal kids start to improve. That wont happen until the City get going with REAL gang enforcement, REAL job growth, and REAL solutions rather than 5 of our favorite old farts talking shop with microphones.

I also brought up people not reporting crimes (with the escalation of juvenile crime in Woodland thats pretty darned school related) in the context of parents taking pride in their City and responsibility for their kids. Two things that would improve our schools...

I forgot to mention...they shouldn't allow cell phones on campus either..the kids are spending a majority of their day social networking in class.

Get Real

PS, The second post you wrote on this thread was indeed insightful on the ranking system of these schools. Its a very flawed method.

dino said...

Get Real,

I didn't bring up the city council in this thread... I only responded to the irrelevant comments and attempted to tie them to the topic.

It seems you are now relating what happens in the city to the school... to clean up the city, as you suggest, we do need to talk about how they manage our taxes.

Uncommon Sense said...

It is my understanding that the kids are told that the CST "test" won't be counted against their grade and that their scores will determine how much money the teachers get paid.....sooooo what do kids do when they know they can "stick it" to the teachers for any "slight" real or imagined. The do and "AC-DC" test where the mark the bubbles A the C then D then C, or make christmas trees out of the Scan tron. If the teachers hadn't told the kids the test didn't matter then the scores wouldn't have been "AC-DC" or a christmas tree.

dino said...

6:29

You are misinformed and have a naive understanding on the purpose of the tests and how they are administered. If we are jumping to conclusions, I would say the kids who would make Christmas tree patterns on their tests would be the ones who would score poorly anyway. Fortunately, proctors are trained to look for such behavior, the tests would be taken, and the child would have to take the test again under closer supervision.

Dino!!! The Daily Kos is not a creditable source of information. All they do is bash Bush. The only thing Bush got in the Education bill was the name No Child Left Behind. That whole bill with all the ways to spend our money, was written by Ted Kennedy. The money the dk was talking about was given to companies to help kids learn. The individuals listed were owners of those companies. They didn’t get that money to spend on themselves, it was to help kids. The dk knows that too, So why are they saying all these people are getting this money when they know the truth. It is just a big lie…Dino.
OH!! By the way, maybe Woodland should look into getting some of this money to help our kids. Maybe some extra time after school learning English would help. Maybe that Bush money is being spent wisely.

8:57 Big Lie

A Sonoma State team researched the topic and deemed it worthy to include in their annual "Project Censored" list of news that didn't make the "news." Did you read the volumes about NCLB from the sources? Did you follow the sources cited in the sources? I did. I actually contacted an author of the NY Times to confirm some information. This was all part of my studies of the NCLB as part of a university course.

I would say your anonymous comment stating something is not "creditable" speaks for itself. And if you think Ted Kennedy actually contributed anything of merit to this legislation, you have a limited knowledge of how congress works.

Do you know anything about NCLB? Do you know percentages each state must allocate towards testing and training? Do you know who started an education training business in Texas at the same time the bill was conceived? Do you know how big the test and book publishing industry is?

Your statement "The money the dk was talking about was given to companies to help kids learn" is exactly what the government wants you to believe.

You have demonstrated your very narrow perspective of federal education laws, how they relate to state laws and finally how districts interpret and administer education. And it is clear you are not an educator who is at the bottom of the flumes along with the students.

You need to dig a little deeper to discredit the findings of numerous professors, researchers, watchdogs, journalists and educators.

Dino,
The ballot measure will be signed by all five council members, including Marble.

dino said...

10:57

Yes. Like I said, council approved it to be placed on the ballot. All of them voted for that.

The ballot measure, by itself, is not an endorsement. If an endorsement statement urging voters to vote yes is eventually signed by all of them, then you can include Marble. Marble did not endorse a tax increase at that meeting. You might know if he is, but he didn't express his opinion that night.
