Gang and racial slurs turn into last call melee at Tony's bar, 50 to 60 involved

From the City of Woodland, Police:

On February 27 at approximately 2 am, a Woodland Police Sergeant on-viewed a large fight involving approximately 50 to 60 patrons in the parking lot of Tony's Bar, 607 East Street. Due to the size of the melee other officers from the Woodland Police Department, two Woodland Police K-9 units, and a contingent of deputies from the Yolo County Sheriff's Department responded to quell the disturbance.

The fight involved two groups who were shouting gang and racial slurs at each other to instigate further assaults. There was one report of a tire iron being used to batter one victim. Bottles were being thrown and plants on the patio were being overturned.

I heard all the sirens lastnight and knew it would somehow be one more example of how police chief Sullivan has been asleep at the whell for the past 8 years.

When is the city manager going to admit that we need a police chief who can handle this level of crime? One who would have nipped it in the bud long before it could get to this point.

Nickname: 2little2late-Sullivan.

Were they watching a city council meeting on the sales tax increase that will increase the cost of their alcohol?

Or maybe they were just celebrating the tax increase so city staff can sneak another 10 percent pay raise to the police chief.

Woodland has become a violent gang infested place. Time to leave and let the filth have this place to themselves.

Come on - a few drunks slap each other around. Not a big deal - not a big crime.

Chief Sullivan's only fault for this incident is having a system that was able to respond to the problem and deal with it. That is not a fault, it is exactly what he was hired to do.

They turned over the potted plants? Those bastards!

Is it on anyones radar that the Sups want to raise sales tax as well. Double bad.

Yeah. It makes no sense to hold the police chief accountable for our town being overrun by thugs. We should definately blame the head librarian, or the fire chief.

Why do we pay the chief again? I can't remember...

Did the cops tazer any plants to death?

2/27/10 5:24 PM got the point but missused it. If you don't like the chief because you did not get promoted or something just say so.

You know very well that the police chief can not stop a bunch of drunks from getting into a fight. Civil liberties are well beyond his control.

In this case the fight was put to an end quickly because the police chief planned well, had the necessary resources to handle the situation, and keep it confined.

Sad as it is, you can't legislate against stupid and the civil liberties zellots have made sure that those of dimished capacity are allowed to roam our streets and bars.

Sullivan is the worst chief to ever hold the office.

How do you explain the fact that the officers are considering a THIRD no confidence vote.

Poor morale, the loss of experienced officers - some for lesser paying jobs, accepting 10% pay raises when all his staff are being forced to take %5 cuts in salary.

Conducting personal business on city time - rotary, SADVC, chamber business, etc.

The man is not a leader and not good for Woodland.

The only thing he is really good at is kissing the council's proverbial butt.

Defend him all you like. The only people that do defend him are his lap dogs at the office and there is only one that I am aware of today.

This thread is retarded.

Woodland has had bar fights and brawls before....for decades....

This has nothing to do with City taxes...nothing to do with the Chief of Police sucking as bad as he does...

Even the plants being tossed is not really an issue.

Reading between the lines however....the racial slurs etc... show a City that is overrun with Gang activity and on the verge of a racial riot. The folks on each side of the color line are sick of each other and it's coming to a boil.

You can bet your sweet bank account that if there is another no confidence vote by the police union for the Chief then that is good for the taxpayer.

The public safety unions have held the citizens of California hostage too long.

Let's be clear, a non confidence vote only comes about when the leader does not do what the union tells them to do.

I am grateful to have a chief who is not a union lacky. It is just too bad that the council and city manager have empowered the unions so much.

Nice try ya lap dog.

This chief, not the union or the officers, is the single biggest waste of taxpayer dollars in the history of Woodland PD. Come one...did he really ask for a 10% raise for abandoning the PD (or should I say further abandoning the PD) when he should be 100% focused on reversing Woodland's cancerous gang and crime problem?

What the mayor needs to realize is the you cannot solve a problem simply by adding more of the same to the solution. We need a change of leadership at the helm and the fact that the unions have tried 2 or 3 times to send this message is really a sad commentary of just how lazy our elected officials have become in this towm.

Seriously. We shoot for the bottom of the barrell and we still miss!

I agree that the Police and Fire unions are controling our City Council. Wake up Council you represent the Citizens not the greedy Unions.

I am the lap dog and you are or are related to a police officer?

Don't lie it is not nice.

Lap Dog you are clueless.

1. Woodlanders can see that our town is now the ghetto of Yolo County

2. WPD officers are STILL crying out for better leadership (and have been for the past 5 years)

3. Most leaders from other local law enforcement agencies think the WPD chief has made several major errors because he is arrogant and he is simply not effective in a leadership role

That spells failure in all the major areas of my scorecard.

Lap Dog - you are true to form. Yap yap yap from your little window sill. Totally clueless about the real world outside.

Just to be clear lap dog still wants to know which you are; police officer or related to one in some way?

Some of us are pleased with the chief's participation in the broader community and recognize that his isolation inside the police station whould be of no benefit to the department and the community it serves.

The comments blaming one person for irresponsible adult actions is a joke. Get a life or get out of town.

Lap Dog

Actually I'm a mother of 6concerned about how unsafe Woodland has become.

We have enough community service clubs and chamber members. The police chief accomplishes nothing by rubbing elbows. (Maybe feed his own ego and delusions of grandure.) Admit it. These groups are not grand central for intel on gangs OR drugs OR crime.

A mayor or city manager would be more educated, appropriate and effective liasons for the business community.

He is not a leader.
No one is following him.
Woodland has become a ghetto under his tenure.
