Resident wonders why Woodland doesn't have a New Year event

Letter to the Woodland Record editor:

Isn't there something that Woodland can do to help its residents gather somewhere in the community to celebrate the entrance of the New Year in an alcohol free, family environment? It seems that we could coordinate with local businesses, the Yolo County Fair Mall and grounds, or something, to develop an event that we can show Woodland residents that we can have good wholesome fun on an occasion that affects everyone.

Maybe we can have a falling tractor instead of a ball. Whatever, lets just see what we can do. Many of us are left in our homes when we would like to celebrate with many others without all the booze. This year, we will stay home because I can't find anything going on in this town worth going to.

What can we do?

I think it would be great if they set up a big crane at the corner of East and Beamer and let a taco truck drop right at midnight.

Then the party goers can take turns robbing and knifing each other.

Why would anyone want to collect a crowd in Woodland right now? It's a gang war waiting to happen...

I love that some people still believe there is a "society elite" in Woodland but really beyond the downtown business owners and the chamber/city folks....its a wasteland.

i agree lets do something to celebrate...
close main street from 3rd to Cleveland (or longer) and have a gigantic block party w/a different kind of band every other block (including a band for ballroom dancing as well)and no alcohol to be found. with dancing in the street and a contest on who makes the best new year hat, attire, etc...
what about a talent contest? graffiti contest?
best tattoo art?
karaoke contest?
jump rope contest?
dance contest?
who can dance the longest?
limbo contest?
break dancing contest, etc...
elvis contest?
marilyn monroe contest?
Contest who makes the best animal/mammal/rodent,etc. sounds?

Have a stage where residents can come up and tell how they spent their best new years and the old timers can share stories about woodlands past. Rather than a stage we could all be sitting in a circle surrounding a campfire setting and at the end we could all throw in the fire our new years resolutions we wrote on paper.
Have a contest on who makes the best suggestions for downtown renovations/improvements/business/
landscape/parking/parks/events/towncenter/what will bring people downtown/how to pay for it and what it would look like once completed.
Contest who makes the best suggestions on how the City of Woodland can find extra money, budget cuts/programs/wages/stop overpaying for outside contracts/open bidding/etc. so the improvements we need finally get done.
We could have a contest who makes the best "Virgin" New Years drinks and so on...
Who makes the best new years horn to toot at midnight... the ideas are endless.
Downtown restaurants could offer inexpensive and small samples of their foods (like the Tastes of Woodlands Finest).
Tables could be set up where the children could do art work or create their new year hat or ????
Hay bales everywhere for seating.
A volunteer crew who will turn the park benches around facing the street...volunteers to set up/clean up.
Lets do it and show everyone what makes Woodland so special.

RE:Comments about Gangs! Why don't we finally address why they really exist, and lets include why drugs (prescribed or illegal), alcohol, eating disorders, cutting, codependent, etc. all EXIST !!! Isn't the real and honest bottom line for most everyone...Just wanting to be loved, accepted just the way we are without ANY judgment! for who are we to Judge? Unconditional love! All were born and still are - valuable and precious just for being YOU!
And religions and Gods that do not judge! We are our worst critics, isn't that enough!!! Turn off that itty bitty shitty committee in our head and shed the guilt and shame and learn to love ourself! No one can meet another's expectations and why should we try! Expectations are resentments waiting to happen!
Everyone, young and old have emotional and physical wounds, deep and painful...what is really gained when we attack another w/our words, actions and judgment. Isn't it really about You and not the other. Take the finger we point so easily at others and turn it back at ourself! Thats what makes healthy, beneficial & rewarding change! For those we anger at are usually mirrors of ourself!

ummm..ok so we shouldn't judge thug-life gang bangers for being the lawless crap of society that they are? When has a gang ever planted trees on arbor day?

Your post reads like you've been masturbating while listening to the White Album far too long.....

While I am really into staying at home and avoiding folks whose judgment may be impaired by imbibing and who still operate heavy machinery anyway, I wanted to suggest a wonderful resource at Woodland Public Library: the book Zero-Proof Cocktails.

Liz Scott (author) has some fabulous mocktail recipes that expand options way beyond Non-alcoholic beers.

Her recipe for Keffir lime mojitos is so refreshing and zesty, the only thing you will miss is the hangover. And the young folks can enjoy these too.

I just think I'll stay home and clean my weapons and polish my ammo.
