Courthouse garage project stalls, may be dead

There will be no parking structure.

That is the rumor emanating from city hall – although no official word will be announced until perhaps October 6.

"The final decision on whether or not the city/redevelopment agency moves forward with a parking structure will be announced at one of the meetings in October, most likely on October 6," said City Manager Mark Deven. "We are working on the timing for the [Redevelopment] Agency board’s review... as well as getting the [parking] study out for public review in advance of the agency board’s review."

Apparently, a twist in the planning for the courthouse location – and siting of the city's pet garage project - occurred when the State Public Works Board (PWB) approved a preferred site as the block bounded by Main, Fifth and Sixth Streets and Lincoln Avenue. This location is between Freeman Park on Main - also in the sights of those fixated on a downtown garage - and the Woodland Police Department building on Lincoln.

I like this quote "City officials will tell you that the state has changed its mind and no longer wants a garage". From what I've read on this blog/woodlandrecord.com the state has never planned to spend a penny on a garage. Nixing the project is saving the town millions. Finally the blinders are off!!!

Thank you Dino for staying on top of this. Hopefully its true that the City wont be wasting money on an unecessary garage.
