100 years ago today: THE FILINGS ON PUTAH CREEK
From the public domain – Woodland Daily Democrat, July 27, 1909:
Partial Confirmation as to the Capitalists Interested
A Promoter Who does not Say whom He Represents Gives a Hint of His Plans
About two weeks ago the filing of the applications of four rival claimants for the appropriation of the water of Putah creek was exploited in the columns of the Democrat, and later the rumor that one of these claimants represented a syndicate which includes James D. Phelan and Rudolph Sprekels, was given publicity. It was also stated that Mr. Phelan had been negotiating for rights of way and that he had extended his auto excursion into Lake county.
Reports of recents [sic] operations in that county have a strong tendency to confirm the opinion that Messrs. Phelan and Spreckels are contemplating some big deal that involves the utilization of the surplus water of Putah creek for irrigation purposes in Solano and Yolo counties and for the generation of electricity.
A.M. Fairchild a promoter who is not making public whom he represents is working in the vicinity of Middletown. He has intimated that he is back of a scheme to transform Coyote valley into a reservoir. Putah creek is the outlet of this valley.
His plan seems to include the construction of a big dam just below the Phelan ranch at a point where the creek rushes through a narrow place known as "Hell's Half Acre." This, it is said, would back the water up over an area of 3,000 acres to a depth of 300 feet. which aside from the development of electric power would greatly increase the irrigation facilities of Yolo and Solano counties.

Dam buster:
Wolk screwed it up for everyone. Back then they would have tarred and feathered her for her wild an scenic law.
Isn't Hells half acre out next to Spreckles?
Jamba Juice
What does Matt Rexroad have to say about this nonsense. He is probably in with the developers of this dam. They probably have planned to sell the water to LA and screw us all.
screwed
Screwed:
You are so screwed up, Rexroad would not bow to that kind of water pressure. He has plenty of his own money. I am sure he thinks this is a crazy idea as well.
huh? i'm confused. are they buidling a new dam?
9:51 Dam Buster,
I agree. Wolk stuck her big fat nose in our own Cache Creek business. That Davis piece of garbage should stay on her own side of the county and keep wearing those ugly birkenstalk crap with her untrimmed toe nails. Now we couldnt put a dam in if we wanted to. That could solve some of the flooding problems downt the creek in Woodland. And whatever happened to all that electiricty that we were supposed to get 100 yrs ago? Some politician probably messed that all up too.
Where is Bobby Harris when you need him. He needs to interview Wolk about this. I am sure her toenails are not the only trim problem.
What happened to Coyote valley? We should file a frivilous lawsuit on endangered coyotes to stop this madness.
Do we have 5 council members or just 4. My Spidy senses tells me Dotie is non responsive to emails and has been very quiet. She must be up to something no good. I bet her and Davies are working so hard on the parking garage, trying to give money away they cannot even see straight.
Spidy
Well, this has certainly turned into quite a little series of comments.
Some of you may need to understand that this article was written 100 years ago... but I'm glad you're enjoying it.
Why wouldnt we enjoy it Dino, you didnt write it. In fact, why do you always rip off the Democrat with these old stories? Are you paying them royalties? Did you ask for permission? You rag on the Democrat but then you put up their old stories. Youre a no talent.
3:20 Troll
As stated, the article is in the public domain. I don't need permission according to copyright law. If you don't see the benefit, the enjoyment or the irony of the article, that's your problem. The only other papers published then, from what I know, were the Home Alliance (1891 to 1926) and The Mail of Woodland ((1868 to 1937). I don't have the same access to old copies of those papers as I do with the old Woodland Democrat .
And thanks for continuing to read this blog despite my handicap of having no talent. I do my best with the affliction.
Have you read the story of "My left foot"? Dino you are like my left toe. You just sit there like a convoluted pile of flesh, unable to slither out and about to get real stories like the daily deomcrat.
Demo lover
Dino, it does not matter that the article is 100 years old. That is about how long it takes for Government to get something done. So I guess it is relevant.
I disagree with Demo lover, I think you are more like a pinky toe.
So whats going on? Are they building another dam up there? Are there really plans to build one on Cache Creek too?
Wolk is a hundred years old, she burbs dust.
All part of a string of imperialistic land grabs from Native Americans. The Miwok and the Patwin lived in that area. The White Man came in the 19th Century and forced them out. Thank goodness the Indians can get some of that back with the resort. There's no way the State or the U.S. can build a dam along Cache Creek because there is no money. If the Indians wanted a dam they could afford and they should have that right. Of course the White Lady Wolk would probably further her assault on property owners up here.
Michel is a scumbag gangsta..let him strut his sorry ass down my street and see what happns Its harvest time boys
Please pay attention to the story to which you're posting.
What is going on with this story? It's just a darn historical blurb.
In 1907, the Mulholland-Goethals-Davis plan was formed which included storing water behind a dam at Devil's Gate in the Berryessa Valley. The plan never materialized. In 1908, the newly formed U.S. Bureau of Reclamation considered the Dixon plan to supply water to Dixon and Winters. It, too, never materialized. Several other ideas came and went until 1947, when Solano County in cooperation with the Bureau of Reclamation formed the Solano Project in order to provide water to Solano County and surrounding irrigable lands.
The Solano Project plan included building Monticello Dam, the Putah Diversion Dam, the Putah South Canal, the Terminal Dam and Reservoir, the Green Valley Conduit and distribution systems.
To those sore over Wild and Scenic on Cache Creek...you lost. Big. Epic Fail.
We won. The creek is protected and oh, by the way, you lost.
And not just on this. You lost on every other environmental issue in Yolo County since then.
You conservatives have no more power in this county. So continue to pule...and lose.
You tree hugging losers would kill all humans to save a toad. that will work!
Take a Wolk on the Wild Side. I like the comment about Bobby interviewing her. Summer of Love.
Yeah, they could smoke some bud on their 4:20 break and discuss all the ways possible to fix the world mannnnn!
Still wondering where the new dam is supposed to go........ hellooooo................
Dude; The article is 100 yrs old
Jamba Juice
Oh....... never mind : )
Burro:
Why wasn't electricity included in the plans for Monticello Dam? It just seems like a wasted opportunity. Do you know of any plans to construct a dam on Cache Creek? That could solve some flooding problems as well.
Maybe we can utilize the new parking structure downtown as a flood wall. Maybe that is there real intention.
I knew spreckles would be behind something like this. I am glad the city shut them down years ago. All that smell problem that they made. I wonder what the smell is coming from now that they are gone?
Helen Thomson screwed the county back then by not getting us electricity and now shes screwing the tribe up the other valley. Thank god she's leaving. shes a dinosaur. Hope she is cozy in her stupid toad tunnel. She and Lois Wolk are two peas.
