Unions could help with $1.3 million of city budget reductions
Excerpts from the Yolo Sun article entitled "City Employee Associations Wield Key Piece of Woodland’s Budget Puzzle:"
Municipal employees are wielding pivotal influence within the final phase of bridging Woodland’s widening budget chasm.
The expenditure-reduction target for attaining a balanced budget has recently been raised to $6.8 million (up $.5 million) – to be slashed from the $45 million budget for fiscal year 2009-10.
In closed session prior to the regular City Council meeting of May 19, Woodland City Manager Mark Deven “informed the group [of five professional, employee associations] that the City needs total compensation reductions of approximately $1.3 million in order to balance the budget for [fiscal year 2009-10] and avoid layoffs and deeper reductions in programs and services.”
$1.3 million represents about a 7% compensation reduction for city employees, whether accomplished by furloughs, salary decreases and/or lessening of benefits.

The City of Woodland budget crisis is now in the City Employees Unions hands. It will sure show which unions are willing to work out problems with Council on this crisis. If they won't work with Council they will show that they don't respect the Citizenz of Woodland, Council and fellow City Employess.
meanwhile, at the County level, Mr. Rexroad is enjoying cutting all these services for the 'worst people' as he has called them.
The city is upset that the state will probably raid funds that was supposed to go to the county and city. Now the city wants to balance their books on the backs of their employees. I don't mind helping out, but the city doesn't have a clue what the correct figures are. 6.3 million was thrown around, now 6.8 million, what is the correct figure. Their asking for 7% back from employees and then recently the city council came up with 5%. Before the city goes to the unions they should get all the revised operating budgets with all the personnel freezes and determine what their actual figure is. Is it 6.8 million after the frozen positions or before. Is the city trying to get that 13% reserve on the employees back, if that's the case then they should look somewhere else or wait until the economy improves. I want to help but I don't want to be taken advantage of.
Is city council using this as a tactic? IMHO - Get rid of unions they cost to much. Learn to spell.

Spelling is overrated. Most normal dumb folks like me rely on spell check. Unfortunately, this dang comment section does not have it.
cost too much
If you are using firefox they have a built in spell check in the browser. Just one more reason to change to the 'better' browser...(not to mention the security implications of using that lame dinosaur IE.)
Anon 6/1/ - 7:49 Are gays or Mexicans unionized, I thought these were on his top ten list of worst people?
Mr. Holt, we do not use Firefox, we do not like it. We like the archaic. So Chris deal with our misspellingz. I am at the point I misspell things just to get a rise out of the guy.
Now back to the subject, Unions are the reason Ca and the country is facing the problems we have. Get rid of the unions, lower cost to City and County Govt. THe union workers cost more than regular workers and the County is now laying of the regular non union workers first. This is not fair or how a normal business would be run.
Rexroad should cut his 2 aids at $65K each, new car, free computer and other perks, just like the rest of us are having to. I think one of his aids is a roving aid that is currently banished to the Gibson house. While we the taxpayers pay for it.
