I saw the signs of notice advertising this sidewalk sale in one of the shops downtown. I did not remember the date so I went to the Chambers website. It was not even listed.
Does our Chamber of Commerce work with the downtown businesses???
No they are to small. Chamber told me that directly. Maybe they could pin up an ad at Costco.
I went downtown to see the stuff at the sidewalk sale. Sadly disappointed. Crap and more crap. I have attended many sidewalk sales and this was truly not a sidewalk sale. The antique stores had the most stuff outside with the exception of the yolohospice. Yet its was nothing but junk. What I did notice was the amount of people that were downtown for the sidewalk event. I did not feel comfortable leaving my kids alone. If that give you any indication of the type of people this attracted. Not to mention the homeless people in the plaza for the free concert. I left shaking my head wondering what the theme of Recycle, Reduce, Respect meant.
I disagree , thank you to these ladies for taking the time to get the downtown going and put in the effort. If we all worked together, it would be a better community. It is nice to see they are working with the city. Personally I like our small town feel and would rather rummage through other peoples treasures than fight the traffic in at the Gateway center.
This is why our business on Main st are surviving and the Big boxes and mall are failing. I enjoy the House Dresser, Gifted Penguin and Blue Wing Gallery. They also have the Fri night thing going, I have only been to one but it is a great effort. These are the people that support our local non profits and contribute to the community. Big Boxs do not.
I like the theme given these troubling times.
I stopped by Rexroad's house during the sidewalk sale and got a great deal on a used waterboarding platform.
4/24/09 10:21 PM,
I wonder if the management team at the city feels the same way about our "small" businesses. I know they drool over the big developers and their big box stores they bring with them.
I thought our chamber of commerce was here to support ALL business. Not just the ones BIG enough to count.
Dustin's words just keep echoing, don't they...
A light might go on when the Woodland Chamber goes under and the Wacky Woodlanders Downtown Prevail... We can always hope..
To Anon: Was Rexie trying to raise local money for his campaign this time and had to resort to selling his prised waterboard?
For all those who have some civility left here is the latest from REXROAD's BLOGFFFFFFFFFFF
BTW I live here in Woodland and feel no one should admit and promote torture. I feel sorry for his wife and children. This guy is just spun the wrong way for my taste.
Viva the REXROAD Blog"

Dear Mr. Rexroad, I read with great interest your opinions on water-boarding and other forms of torture. It seems that, at some time in your childhood, you might have attended one of those rather awful British 'public' (i.e. private) schools where a boy is either A Bully or Is Bullied; and that this, or some other strong early influence, has left you with a strong proclivity to sado-masochism. Perhaps, if you try really hard, you can get over it! I am British, and have been told that this is possible; sometimes writing an autobiography about those days can help. However much you have not minded the treatments that you have undergone, perhaps have even enjoyed them, this does not mean that everyone feels the same.
On a rather more serious note.... please do not hesitate to express your opinions widely and often. We need to know these things, particularly when it is time to vote for or against our representatives. Fortunately, it does not seem likely that your political career will ever reach the heights held by Dick Cheney, whose views on the above I imagine you applaud. XXXXX XXXXXXX, Davis."
The scary part is Rexroad aspires above and beyond Dick Cheney. I hear their looking for a replacement for Saddam Hussin, Matt could send over his resume.
Any other diplomats here in Woodland?
Big boxes and developers fail, small business is able to survive.
I was just wondering what a parent would do if someone kidnapped their child. Hate to think that they would torture someone who had information about where their child was at. Torture? Read about what other countries do, that is torture.
Someone is dreaming if they think the big box stores do not contribute locally.
As far as the Chamber......get involved!
Anon 4:06 PM, I totally agree with your last line of the post
I too agree that our Chamber should get involved with the local businesses!
You are also correct to state that big boxes contribute to our community. They hire people and they generate badly needed tax revenues.
The original post was in reference to the Downtown business sidewalk sale. I think both big box and independant business can co-exist. The City of Woodland, its local paper, and its Chamber should be required to support both types of business. Their support is ONLY for the big fish at this time. That is truly sad.
