Any bets on who the LCC has already picked?
Bobby, Fred, and Jeff. In that order.
Wrong Art is the one
One of the LLC members already let it slip that Art is the only one being picked. He is on the board and a good friend of Jesses and it is really all about brown power.
The questions are being kept secret until the debate. If anyone believes that Art does not have them already mores the fool. Smell set up on this one.
Big question here if Dino is brave enough to allow - how come it would be racist to have a Cacausion Council but it is okay to have a Latino council?
3:20
That's an interesting way to phrase a question... would I be brave enough? What is that? Is bravery hiding behind an anonymous comment?
You're the one who brought up the racist aspect of your own question, so clearly you have a problem with it. If you go to the Scottish Games this month, you will see thousands of people celebrating Anglo-Celtic culture. I'm sure if the Caledonian Club sponsored a political debate, nobody would mind.
And just so you know, there are Caucasian Latinos - just as there are Black Latinos and Native American Latinos. Cultural organizations, such as the LCL are necessary because some cultural groups have historically been underrepresented in the United States.
Oh... guess what? The League of Women Voters is sponsoring a debate, too. Do you have any misogynistic questions about that?
They already have the white boy club. It is the City Council. lol
Art slipped in because he is mucho grengo.
Excellent idea Dino! Lets do a Scottish Games Debate. I will bring the caber and the kilts should be a whole lot of fun;)
JM
JM - good luck in the games and I refer to both the debate and the Scottish games. Say hi to Kent, Jeff and Kraig for me.

I want to moderate the debate at the Scottish Games! I am a member of the Farquharson Clan, and proud of it! My clan is known for fairness, intelligence, tenacity, attitude, gripping fast (always useful in a debate!), fidelity and fortitude. I'm in!
Leslie (Bowman) Marcus
Leslie: That would not be right for you to run a debate. Unless you are closely tied to a candidate of course. Then you would be par for woodland. Just like DH running the Supervisors debate and the Measure A stuff. Real fair and balanced. Now she is chief of staff for Rexroad. Now when you think back to all of the debates Matt and Dotie were connected to, it makes you wonder.
If the latino Community Council is dumb enough to make such a rookie error as to only endorse Art then they will lose all credibility.
There is a long history of rights movements in CA and the USA and none were successful without being wholly inclusive of all people. No one race has power if they isolate themselves.
I agree completely that having "secret" when Art is a member of this group is just stupid. It just goes to show that they are worried Art won't impress people with his impromptu answers and they have to give him the answers in advance so only his competitors will have to react on the spot.
The ONLY way to ensure fairness is in fact to give ALL candidates the questions in advance. Especially when there is an insider like Art.
If the LCC cared about how people even perceived the integrity of their organization they would do it this way.
Almost all other debates are set up with questions in advance for this very reason. Too much temptation to leak the questions and no way to prove it didn't happen.
The audience will always pop up with enough impromptu questions for candidates and THAT is how you get to see them respond to blind questions.
I will no longer support the Latino Community Council if they do that.
What a silly debate - someone is spreading a rumor that because Art is a member of the LCC he will have rehearsed answers to questions kept secret from the others. Some posters are reacting to innuendo?
I'm not of the Latino community, but feel that since over 50% of the populace are - why shouldn't the LCC hold a CC debate? Good grief, people - get a grip. Art is a good example for all the young people in this community.
"Art is a good example for all the young people in this community."
That is the funniest thing I have seen posted on this blog ever.
ROFLMAO
The latino council obviously thinks we are all too stupid to see through this.
The other candidates should cancel or boycot. They should not validate this kind of shinanigans.
To Anonym 8:12
You have shown your ignorance and biased. We are not dumb as you claim us to be. We have no secret candidates. I am a member of the LCC and have lend my support to two candidates, one a Latino and the other a women. I have not yet endorsed a third candidate but might.
I need to review their positions on issues and see how they do in the debates. I am not basing my decision only on the debates but on where the candidates stand on number of important issues to me. As a member of the LCC, I have voted for candidates that I believed would be effective representatives of the community at large and the Latino community as well. During the last board election, there were four candidates running for the school board, including two Latinos. The LCC supported two candidates, including only one of the two Latino candidates. The LCC members will vote to support candidates. Each member will make his or her decision based on what one believes are the best candidates.
8:12, you should become informed about LCC before you make dumb and uninformed comments.
"The latino council obviously thinks we are all too stupid to see through this.

Gee, 12:52PM - if you can't spell "shenanigans" let alone "boycott", maybe the LCC has reason to think some in this city are "all too stupid". By the way ..not to belabor the point - but "shenanigans" is plural so it should read "these kind of ...."
Nobody cares but you ya prude!
Nope, not a prude - just someone who has been hoping that the educational level of the "average" Woodlander would have progressed upwards over the years.
Guess I'm going to have to continue to wait and to hope.
I love it when people get bent out of shape when comments have misspelled words. If this is the only thing wrong with a comment, then why blast the poor person? Are you upset with what they have to say rather than their spelling? Then say so. Some people don't take the time to double check their spelling before hitting the publish your comment key. Big deal. Cut people some slack. You will never know if the error is from lack of education or simply a mistake on the keyboard - and we all make those once in a while.
I know Dino would love for us all to use correct spelling and grammar, but come on...this is only a blog and people are constantly using the trendy shorthand from texting these days. Why should this be any different. If someone misspells a word...whatever. Stick to the meat of the comment and its connectivity to the topic. Who cares if they can spell supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
Madame ABC
Well, if this wasn't a string of relatively unenlightened comments! Can't we do better than this people?
sure, you start.
Madame ABC,
I misspelled LCC earlier in these comments, but everyone knows that I don't know anything : )
For example... I don't know what the heck 12:53 is talking about - what is this conspiracy theory that would make council candidates boycott? Are you relying on what the mysterious 3:20 said as truth?
Yeah... the LCC debate is a ploy to brainwash all of us! We will all be programmed to vote for whomever LCC endorses!
Dear Dino,
I don't rely on anyone to tell me the truth, especially on a blog. I was merely commenting on people getting bent out of shape at misspelling words rather than arguing against the person's poorly spelled opinion.
Now back to the debate of City Council, not whether one should have to have been the spelling bee winner in order to post on WJ.
Madame ABC
Madame ABC -
Not only was it a poorly spelled (or spelt - if you are from the UK) opinion, but it was a very poor one in the first place - IMHO.
I believe the poor spelling comment was tongue-in-cheek about someone who was taking a rumor about the LCC and directing the other candidates to stay away from the forum based merely on another posters comment. The use of the word "shenanigans" implying that the LCC was involved in backroom politics (or even cheating) indicates very little critical thinking on the part of Mr./Ms. 12:53 PM. Again - IMHO
Madame ABC,
Sorry... I switched gears in the middle of my comment. The second paragraph was rhetorically directed to 12:53. It seemed he/she was taking 3:20's comment about a "set-up" as a fact.
Obviously, the notion of some conspiracy behind the debate is ridiculous.
Fifteen or even twenty years ago, a variety of community groups used to get together and jointly sponsor council forums. Then the forums were televised on cable. A great many people paid attention to these forums. Notice I did not say attended these forums, I said "paid attention to these forums." The distinction being that people either attended, watched them on TV, or read about them in the Daily Demo. The point is that by consolidating the forums greater interest was generated. The problem is that today, and I don't mean this to be a knock on the LCC, we have a number of groups holding forums which dilutes attention, tends to decrease rather than increase attendance and enables the candidates to pick and choose and tailor make their comments to fit the interests of a particular group. Frankly, I think we were better served by the prior method.
I agree with the above. They should run debates like other metting, - have the agenda/questions posted for all parties interested, in advance and availible,to the public, and then have question (public comment) from the audience given to the moderator.
This way the candidates will be on the same page and there is no possibiliity for cheating.
If Artemio is a member of this group, or club or whatever it is, then I don't believe for one second that his pals on the board have not given Art some hints.
Isn't Jese Ortiz a huge supporter of Art's and isn't he like the president of this group?
Does anyone have the list of the Latino Community Council Board Members? I would like to compare this with Art's endorsement list.
HEY -maybe that's why Art has not released that endorsement list! The Latino Community Council is probably half of Art's endorsements as individuals and they don't want the public to know until AFTER the debate, so it doesn't SMELLLLLLLLL!
Some people are dyslexic.
I guess the blog-prudes have no room in their world for imperfection.
Anonym 4/13/08 7:15 PM
Yes, Art is a member of the LCC just like he probably belongs to other groups, including City Council. By the way all the members of the City Council, except Monroe support Art.
I am sure that Art has many more supporters besides some that might be members of City Council and LCC. If you donot like Art vote against him but stop making anti LCC comments. Some may think you are a biased individual. Wake up and smell the frijoles.
Duh. Jeff and Art are on the same ballot. Candidates on the same ticket often support each other in spirit but hey it's a campaign right?
But if you must insist on being an ignoramous:
All the council members support Jeff except for Art. So wake up and smell the Same Standard rule.
First we were told to smell the frijoles and now the same standard rule. I had no idea our olfactory skills would be so critical in this election.
